Export ChatGPT Conversations to PDF, DOCX, Markdown, TXT & JSON

Right-click a conversation, pick a format, and it downloads as a clean file — PDF, DOCX, Markdown, TXT, or JSON. Code blocks keep their syntax highlighting and math keeps its formatting, so a technical chat exports looking like the original instead of a wall of raw text.

Export is part of the free ChatGPT Pro Tools extension. Every format is included, and everything is built in your browser — no upload, no server, no conversion site.

What You Get

  • Five formats — PDF, DOCX, Markdown (.md), plain text (.txt), and JSON, all from one menu
  • Code and math render right — PDF and DOCX keep syntax-highlighted code blocks and LaTeX equations instead of flattening them to plain text
  • Export from anywhere — the sidebar conversation menu, the chat header, or in bulk from the Chat Manager
  • Whole projects — export every chat in a project in one run
  • Batch exportselect several chats and export them together
  • Pick your messages (Pro) — a picker lets you export only the messages you choose; free exports the full chat
  • All local — files are generated in your browser, so nothing you export is ever uploaded

Why ChatGPT's Built-in Export Isn't Enough

ChatGPT's own export emails you a ZIP of every conversation as raw JSON — there's no single-chat option and no PDF or DOCX at all. Printing to PDF from the browser drags in the sidebar and buttons and needs you to scroll the whole chat first. This exports just the conversation, in the format you actually want. For the full walkthrough, see the complete export guide or the dedicated export-to-PDF guide.

How to Use It

Step 1: Install ChatGPT Pro Tools

Get it from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons. It activates automatically on chatgpt.com.

Step 2: Open a conversation menu

Right-click any chat in the sidebar, or open the chat header menu on the conversation you're reading. To export several at once, switch to the Chat Manager or Batch Select.

Step 3: Pick a format

Choose PDF, DOCX, Markdown, TXT, or JSON. The file downloads in a couple of seconds, with the chat title as the filename.

Free vs Pro

All five formats are free, including batch and whole-project exports. Free batches cover up to 7 chats at a time, and free exports carry a small "Generated with ChatGPT Pro Tools" footer. The optional Pro tier ($4.99/mo) removes that footer, lifts the 7-chat batch cap, and unlocks the message picker so you can export only selected messages instead of the whole chat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What formats can I export to?

Five: PDF, DOCX (Microsoft Word), Markdown (.md), plain text (.txt), and JSON. They're all in the same export menu, and all are free.

Do code blocks and math export correctly?

Yes. PDF and DOCX exports keep code blocks with syntax highlighting and render LaTeX math properly, so technical conversations look right in the file instead of collapsing into raw text.

Can I export more than one chat at once?

Yes. Select several chats in the Chat Manager or Batch Select and export them in one run. Free batches cover up to 7 chats at a time; Pro removes the cap. Whole projects can be exported too.

Is exporting free?

Yes. Every format is free. Free exports carry a small attribution footer, and the optional Pro tier ($4.99/mo) removes it and adds a picker for exporting only selected messages.
